A Day for the Veterans

November 2012

Right around this time last year, I was able to attend my husband’s promotion ceremony and pin on his new rank with our lovely new baby girl, Lachlyn. It was one of the few times I’ve seen my husband in uniform and it was amazing to be able to attend AND participate.

I’m grateful for my husband, my grandfather, my friends and all other veterans that I don’t know for doing the job they do. Today is a great day to honor those that have served. Not only do I appreciate everything my husband does for his job and for his family, I appreciate it every day, not just on this holiday.

Happy Veteran’s Day to all that have served and all that support those that serve, either spouses or family or friends.

Monday Must-Haves: Home Reminders

I haven’t lived in Vermont for over 9 years, but I still call it home. The majority of my family remains there, as does Husby’s. Looking back, it seems hard to believe that I spent the first 20 years of my life there because the memories seem so faded + distant. I feel as though I can’t navigate my way around there anymore without a GPS, which seems insane to me because I used to drive all over the state aimlessly, when I got my first car, without ever getting lost.

Vermont brings a lot of great memories: playing in the woods, camping, walking everywhere, dirt roads, mountains, swimming in rivers, fresh air, college… the list goes on.

Now, living about 18 hours away (driving), there are a few things that we like to keep around the house to remind us of home:

Woodchuck Cider (photo via Pinterest) ~ a nice cold cider on a hot summer day is simply amazing! I’m not a beer drinker, but also great Vermont brews include: Magic Hat, Long Trail + Otter Creek

Vermont State Flag ~ Husby has the VT state flag hanging in our garage. Such a simple design, but it represents Vermont the best.

Vermont Maple Syrup ~ there is nothing better than 100% pure Vermont maple syrup on your pancakes or waffles… or on everything!

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream (photo via Pinterest) ~ a freezer isn’t complete without B&J ice cream. With soo many different flavors, I don’t think I can have just one favorite… but among them are: Creme Brulee, Late Night Snack + Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch.

Cabot Cheese (Image Source) ~ hands down, the best cheddar cheese there is out there!

What reminds you of home?

Recipe Roundup!

This week I’ve got two dinners + two desserts for you to try. I’m trying to slow down my baking until I can round up some more friends to take them… or at least switch over to baked goods that can be shipped! I never thought it would be so hard to get baked desserts out of the house, but husby + I just don’t eat them often enough to keep up with it all.

Chicken Gyros via Annie’s Eats ~ instead of stuffing into a pita, I used naan bread as a substitute. Tastes amazing, but be prepared to start 24 hours before you want to eat to prepare the tzatziki sauce.

Coconut Macaroon Nutella Nests via Two Peas & Their Pod

Mini Whiskey Oatmeal Cream Pies via Food Plus Words ~ I used Cabin Fever, a maple flavored whiskey in this recipe. They taste exactly like the pre-packaged oatmeal cream pies with a kick of booze!

Spiced Pork Chops via Gordon Ramsay’s Healthy Appetite with Sweet Potato Italian Fries via Martha Stewart Recipes

Enjoy!

Monday Must-Haves! Gifts for Gags

I’d say that I’m more of a gag gift giver, than a meaningful, thoughtful gift giver. I tend to give out gag gifts a lot + they are great for your husband, best friend, sibling, parents, cousins, co-workers… you name it. Everyone likes a good laugh, so why not make people smile on birthdays/Christmas/anniversaries/etc?

Pocket Shots via PocketShot.net ~ I think I’ll be contributing these to our annual “Bad Santa” gift exchange at work this year. Who doesn’t need a shot of tequila after a stressful work day?

Emergency Clown Nose via Perpetual Kid ~ Not only should you carry one in your purse, but you should get them for your friends too. You never know when you are going to need to make someone laugh or run away scared.

Edible Dried Zombie Skin via Think Geek ~ With all the people obsessed with zombies these days, anyone that you give this gift to will be the envy of everyone. It is also vegan, all natural + gluten free! It is good for everyone!

Mustachifier Pacifier via Perpetual Kid ~ Kids are always saying they wish they were older… add instant age to your newborn and they’ll be having a mid-life crisis in no time.

Human Organ Lunch Tote via Perpetual Kid ~ Keeps your co-workers from stealing your lunch out of the fridge, right?

Gag gifts are a lot of fun. Sometimes they get used + sometimes they just go in a junk drawer + sometimes they get re-gifted {share the fun}! Where do you shop for gifts?
